If you’re a tourist aged 18 or above, you can claim back Value Added Tax (VAT) on goods purchased in Dubai. You’ll need a receipt with a Tax-Free Tag, generated while shopping with your passport or GCC ID. Before check-in, you should validate your purchase at one of the Planet Payment kiosks in the Departures areas across DXB’s three terminals. You’ll receive 85% of the total VAT amount paid, minus an admin fee of AED4.80 per tax-free form.
The UAE introduced a Value Added Tax (VAT) of five per cent (5%) in 2018, but tourists can still enjoy tax free shopping across the country. Refunds for VAT are only available on goods purchased during your stay in the UAE that are not consumed fully or partially and will be exported by the tourist when exiting the country. Planet Tax Free is the only operator of the Tourist Refund Scheme, and most stores are registered with Planet, making it easy to secure your refund at the time of departure.
You must visit the Planet counters before you check in when leaving the country to validate your transactions and complete the process. These can be found at designated exit points (airports, land borders and seaports) across the country. You must export your purchases within 90 days of the invoice date of your transaction(s) before exiting the UAE. To learn more about tax free shopping in the UAE, visit Planet’s website or download their Mobile app and Leaflet.
